Choosing a metal roof color for your home is an important decision, but it doesn’t have to be a hard decision. In this article will explore a few important things to consider when choosing your next roof color.
Our Favorite Panel
Before we talk about specific colors, we should mention our favorite roof panel. We recommend the Panel-Loc Plus roof panel to most of our customers. Besides looking great on your home, it offers incredible durability and excellent bang for your buck. Now, let’s choose a roof color.

Climate and Efficiency
Here at Texas Metal Masters we serve North and Central Texas where our winters are usually short and mild, and our summers are long and brutal. To improve the heating and cooling efficiency of your home, you’ll want to reduce the amount of heat that your roof absorbs through sunlight.
While all of our metal roofs do reflect some of the sun’s rays away from the surface of the roof, a light colored roof is a lot more reflective than a dark colored roof. The most reflective roof color is white (Brilliant), followed by metallic colors like copper and silver (Galvalume, Galvanized, and Copper Metallic).
Ivory and Alamo are also great options for keeping your attic temperatures lower.

Metal Roof Durability
Upgrades in paint technology have come a long way since the early days of colored metal roofs. While colors like blue, red, and green used to have significant fade issues, modern technology has greatly improved durability. For that reason, we don’t hesitate to offer any of the colors available in the Panel-Loc Plus lineup.
Our panels come with a 30 year fade warranty from the manufacturer as well as a 40 year or limited lifetime paint warranty, so you don’t need to let concerns about color durability affect your decision.

Metal Roof Maintenance
All of our panels are designed to be maintenance free in terms of keeping your home protected and dry. That being said, there are some colors that may require an occasional cleaning in order to look their best.
Very light colors may show some dirt over time. A good cleaning with a power washer will get your light colored roof looking great again.
The Copper Metallic roof will develop a patina, which is the result of oxygen interacting with the surface. While many people love the beauty and character of aged copper, just keep in mind that its color will change. The copper patina doesn’t affect the durability of the roof.

Metal Roof Aesthetics
What metal roof color will look best on my home? This is honestly the biggest consideration for most homeowners. While the answer to that question is ultimately a personal choice, here are a few guidelines to help you get started.
Roof Color Trends
At the time of writing this article, dark metal roofs are very much in vogue. Our most popular dark color is Burnished Slate. It has a brownish hue, without being a plain jane brown. It works well on a lot of red brick homes, where the shingle roof would normally be a variegated brown and gray color.

We’ve also been installing some Black roofs, which are perhaps the trendiest color of all. Black roofs make a really bold statement, and are especially great on homes with modern architecture or painted white brick.

Red Brick Homes
Generally, if your brick or siding is a medium to dark red, we’d recommend against the Crimson or Rustic colors, as they might be too close to the same color. Generally you want to contrast with your siding, not match it with your roof color.
Green is a really versatile color that looks good on most homes. Hunter and Forest work well on any medium to dark red brick homes. About the only brick color to avoid with a green roof is brick that has a very pink hue.

Painted Siding Homes
If you have a light tan siding, a Brown or Burnished Slate roof could look really sharp. For a home with white siding, any of the medium to dark colors are great options. Generally you’ll want to avoid off whites or light tan roofs, as they don’t provide enough contrast.
If your siding has a more adventurous color like a yellow or light blue, look for darker neutral colors. Brown, Charcoal, and Pewter are all solid options.

Make Yourself Happy
Ultimately, the color of your roof should match your personality and make you happy. While the above guidelines can get you pointed in the right direction, this is your home. Choose the color that brings you the most joy.

Metal Roof Colors in Review
So in conclusion, the four main factors to consider when choosing a metal roof color are:
Efficiency: Determined by how much sunlight the panel reflects.
Durability: This one is actually a non-issue, as all of our colors are durable.
Maintenance: Whether your roof will require occasional cleaning to look great.
Aesthetics: Finding a color that beautifully contrasts with the siding or brick color of your home.
